Where: Mitchell, SD at the intersection of 1st Avenue and Duff Street
Driver One: Michael Sedlmeier, 46, Mitchell, SD Minor injuries
There were no passengers in Vehicle One
Vehicle One: 1998 Ford Taurus
Alcohol involved: Yes
Driver Two: Misty Beth Zilla, 34, Serious but non life-threatening
Rose Hilleson, 63, Serious but non life threatening
Alexis Mentzel, 12, Serious but non life threatening
McKenna Mentzel, 9, Serious but non life threatening
Brielle Zilla, 8 months, serious but non life threatening
Isabella Morgan, 9, Fatal
Vehicle Two: 2006, GMC Yukon Denali
All Occupants are from Mitchell
Both vehicles received disabling damage
Description: Mitchell Police observed Vehicle One speeding on Main Street in Mitchell. When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver fled.
Vehicle One was traveling southbound on Duff Street when it failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of 1st Avenue. Vehicle Two was traveling east on 1st Avenue. The two vehicles collided in the intersection.
As a result of the collision, all occupants in Vehicle Two were injured, including a 9 year-old girl that sustained fatal injuries. The driver of Vehicle One, Sedlmeier, attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was apprehended by the Mitchell Police Officers.
Sedlmeier is being charged with Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Battery, DUI 3rd, and Aggravated Eluding.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating with assistance from Division of Criminal Investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
