Health Department honors Oakland

PIERRE, S.D. – Brett Oakland, Sioux Falls recently received the Excellence in the Workplace Award from the South Dakota Department of Health in the agency’s annual Secretary's Awards Program. The award is presented to a department employee for outstanding performance during the past year.

Oakland is a Disease Intervention Specialist for the department’s Office of Disease Prevention in its Sioux Falls office. He was recognized for his work on a reminder and recall pilot project with southeast area clinics to help increase and maintain childhood immunization rates. Oakland worked directly with nine clinics on reminder and recall systems, providing education and feedback, monitoring progress, and generating missing immunization reports. As a result, the percentage of 19-24 month old clinic patients who were age-appropriately immunized rose from 70% to 83% during the first three quarters of the year alone. The project impacted the lives of more than 400 children, protecting them from diseases such as pertussis and measles by bringing them up to date on their vaccinations.

The project is being used as an evaluation tool for the state’s immunization program and has been approved by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
