Annual mosquito control and West Nile Virus conference scheduled

 

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s annual Mosquito Control and West Nile Virus Conference will be held April 18-19 in Aberdeen. The conference is a joint event of the Department of Health, the Cooperative Extension Service and the North Central Mosquito Control Association and is being hosted by the City of Aberdeen.

 

The conference is intended for city, county and tribal government officials and employees involved in funding, planning and conducting mosquito control programs on the local level.

 

Featured speakers include Dr. Michael Kaufman and Dr. Robert Peterson. Dr. Kaufman is Medical Entomology Research Specialist and an assistant professor at Michigan State University. He is considered a world expert on the microbiota of larval mosquito habitats and recently completed a term as president of the Michigan Mosquito Control Association.

 

Dr. Peterson is Professor of Entomology at Montana State University, where he leads the research, teaching, and outreach program in Agricultural and Biological Risk Assessment. More specifically, the program is centered on comparative risk assessment and includes biotechnology risk, invasive species risk, infectious disease risk, and pesticide risk.

 

Conference events will take place at the Ramkota Inn, 1400 8th Ave. NW, on Wednesday and move to the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center, 225 3rd Ave. SE on Thursday.

 

Topics include arboviral surveillance, South Dakota's 2011 West Nile season, weather outlook for the 2012 season, communicating mosquito control risk, potential re-emergence of West Nile virus in South Dakota and an update from the American Mosquito Control Association.
