  State Encourages Motorcycle Owners to Join ‘Ride to Work Day’

 

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s Office of Highway Safety is encouraging motorcycle owners to join the national Ride to Work Day on Monday, June 18.

 

An estimate from the Congressional Motorcycle Safety Caucus indicated more than one million motorcycle and scooter riders participated in the event last year. In South Dakota, more than 46,400 motorcycles are registered, said Laura Snow, motorcycle safety coordinator for the Office of Highway Safety.

 

“We’re encouraging our motorcycle and scooter owners in South Dakota to become part of the Ride to Work movement,’’ Snow said. “Motorcycles are a fuel-efficient way to travel that saves energy and helps the environment. Besides that, riding is just plain good fun.’’

 

The responsibility to ride safely should always be a companion to the fun of a motorcycle trip, Snow said.  Riders should be trained and licensed and should make safety their top priority. Ride to Work Day is a good reminder of the need for safety on the roadways.

 

“Of course, there’s a shared responsibility for motorists in cars, pickups and other four-wheeled vehicles to also make safe choices and share the road with the riders,’’ Snow said.
“One goal on Ride to Work Day and every other day of the year should be that we all arrive safely.’’
