Use Caution When Shooting Fireworks in Dry Conditions
RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Division of Wildland Fire Suppression is asking everyone to take extra precautions to prevent wildfires during their Fourth of July celebrations.
The possibility of fireworks displays causing fast-moving wildfires has increased significantly for because of recent hot and dry weather in the Black Hills and other parts of the state. The current fire danger is expected to be in the moderate or above category.
Jim Strain, Assistant Chief of Operations for South Dakota Division of Wildfire Suppression, is asking residents and visitors to the state to use extreme precautions when shooting fireworks.
Strain also encourages people to be careful with cigarettes, matches and campfires.
The purchase and discharge of fireworks is prohibited within the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District and many municipalities. Fireworks are also prohibited on all other federal and state lands across South Dakota.
Citizens should be aware that under state and federal law, if they cause a wildfire, they can be liable for suppression costs and other penalties.
The sale and discharge of fireworks is allowed from June 27 through July 5 in South Dakota.
