Microsurfacing Work to Begin in Lyman County

WINNER, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says work to place a microsurfacing seal coat on U.S. Highway 183 in Lyman County will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, June 26.

The work will involve placement of microsurfacing material on Highway 183 from Presho south to the White River, about 15 miles.

This type of seal coat differs from a normal seal coat in that the material placed is a polymerized emulsion, combined with aggregate and cement. The material is applied in a liquid state and is spread over the roadway by a leveling box. It goes down into the road surface as a self- leveling liquid and then hardens quickly, allowing traffic to travel over it after just one hour.

Microsurfacing corrects surface deformities such as wheel rutting and provides a level driving surface.  It is a preservation technique used by the department that is proven to extend the life of a pavement and delay having to do a more expensive asphalt overlay on surfaces where slight to moderate rutting exists.

The contractor for the $536,848 project is Sta-bilt Construction Company from Harlan, Iowa.
