Fatal Crashes on Aug. 7, 2012:

 

Michael Schramm, age 57, of Flat Rock MI, was traveling westbound on Highway 244.  While negotiating a curve in the road, he came upon slower moving traffic.  Schramm locked up his brakes and was thrown from his motorcycle, and was then run over by an eastbound motorcycle operated by Don S. Bryant age 49, of Newton Falls, OH.  Bryant subsequently laid his bike down.  Schramm died as a result of his injuries.  Mr. Bryant received minor injuries.  SD 244 was closed for two hours during the investigation.                                                                           

                                                                                   

Troopers assisted Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office with a fatal motorcycle crash near Cheyenne Crossing.                                                                            

Injury Crashes on Aug. 7, 2012:

 

A motorcycle driven by Andrew Xerikos, age 44, from Rivergrove IL, was traveling west on I-90 near the Tilford Port of Entry. A Dodge Avenger driven by Roy Cao, age 38, from Rapid City attempted to turn around in a median crossover. Xerikos could not avoid a collision and struck the Dodge Avenger. Xerikos was transported to Sturgis Hospital with minor injuries. Cao was issued a ticket for illegal median crossing.

 

A motorcycle driven by John Brewer, age 72, from Lizella GA, was traveling on Pleasant Valley Road near the National Cemetery. The motorcycle drifted off the side of the road and overturned. Brewer was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.  Brewer was not wearing a helmet.

 

A motorcycle driven by Darryl Franklin, age 52, from Manchester NH, was traveling north on SD 79, north of Sturgis. Franklin went into the other lane to miss a turning motorcycle and returned to the proper lane. Franklin did not see a motorcycle driven by Robert Peterson, age 48, also of Manchester NH, and struck the rear of Peterson’s motorcycle.  This caused both motorcycles to go down and throw off the drivers. Both drivers were transported to Sturgis Regional with minor injuries.  Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. Franklin was placed under arrest for DUI.

 

A motorcycle driven by Paul Nemeth, age 31, from Boardman OH, was traveling east on US 14A. Nemeth failed to slow down for the stop sign at 20th Street in Sturgis, and struck a motorcycle driven by James Cleeland, age 45, from Center OH. The drivers were not wearing helmets. Nemeth received serious non-life threatening injuries and was charged with DUI.

 

A Chevrolet Impala driven by Josh Richardson, age 22, from Coolamon Australia, was traveling east on Glencoe Road. Marcel Tellier, age 44, from Sudbury, Ontario Canada was walking west on Glencoe Road. Richardson abruptly swerved across the road and struck Tellier. Tellier was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital with life threatening injuries. Richardson was charged with DUI and vehicular battery.

 

A motorcycle driven by Richard Hall, age 55, from Madras OR, was traveling east on S.D. Highway34 near the Buffalo Chip. A Volkswagen Jetta driven by Holly Cape, age 21, from Hot Springs SD, started to make a left hand turn into the Buffalo Chip from Highway 34. Hall’s motorcycle struck the Volkswagen Jetta. Hall was transported to Sturgis Hospital with minor injuries and the passenger on the motorcycle, Derese Curtis, age 55, of Madras OR, was also taken to Sturgis Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Holly Cape was charged with failure to yield.

 

A motorcycle driven by David Tabatt, age 34, from Albany MN, was traveling east on U.S. Highway 14A near Deadwood when a deer entered the roadway. Tabatt struck the deer and separated from the motorcycle.  Tabatt was transported to Lead Deadwood Hospital with minor injuries. A helmet was not used.

 

A Chevrolet Traverse driven by Timothy Maines, age 26, from Spring TX, was traveling west on I-90 near Sturgis. Maines drove the vehicle into the guardrail and into the ditch. Maines was arrested for DUI and careless driving. The two passengers in the vehicle; Lorne Rutherford, age 51, from Woodlands TX ,and Michael Mandryk, age 48, from Jordan UT, were transported to the Sturgis Hospital with minor injuries.

 

A motorcycle driven by Donald Muzzy, age 38, from Kenmare ND, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 385 south of Deadwood. Muzzy was maneuvering around an uninvolved vehicle and lost control of his motorcycle. Muzzy was transported to Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital with minor injuries and released.

 

A vehicle driven by Thomas Nimick, age 22, from Custer SD, was stopped at the intersection of U.S. Highway 16 and South Rockerville Road. Nimick made an improper right turn and pulled into the passing lane and did not see three motorcycles, driven by Scott McDermott, age 40, from Waterloo, IA, Ryan Wolfenspencer, age 38, and his passenger, Kelly Maher, age 40, both from Waverly, IA, and Brandon Andrews, age 28, from Rochester, MN, traveling in the passing lane. All three motorcycles struck Nimick's vehicle. All four occupants from the motorcycles received serious injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. No helmets were worn and speed and alcohol were not factors.                                                                             

                                                                                   

A motorcycle driven by Raymond Poulin, age 40, and passenger, Beth Poulin, age 39, both from Winona, MN, was traveling west on I-90, 14 miles east of Murdo,  when the rear tire blew out. Poulin lost control and crashed. Poulin was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. Mrs. Poulin was wearing a helmet and received life threatening injuries. Both occupants were transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, S.D. Mrs. Poulin was later transferred to Sioux Falls, S.D. for further treatment. Speed and alcohol were not factors.   

                                                                       

A motorcycle driven by Philip Finkle, age 63, and his passenger, Gracie Finkle, age 53, both  from Hilton Head Island, SC, was traveling south on the Wild Life Loop Rd in Custer State Park. Finkle saw a slower moving vehicle in front of him and locked up his brakes. Finkle lost control and both occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Both suffered injuries and were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Speed and alcohol were not factors. Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

Noteworthy:

 

 

Wade Hall, age 48, of Dorchester SC, was stopped for speeding. The trooper asked if he had any weapons on his person.  A consent search was conducted on his person.  A metal marijuana pipe with burnt residue, a small square box containing marijuana and a small white bottle which contained two baggies of methamphetamine were found. Hall was placed under arrest and transported to the Pennington County Jail.  Hall was charged accordingly.  The motorcycle was seized and is awaiting the asset forfeiture process.                          

 

Troy House, age, 49, of Rapid City, and a passenger , Robert Gotchie, age 46, of Deer River  MN, were stopped for two traffic violations on I-90 MP 66. While talking to the subjects, nervousness was observed from both. During the conversation the driver told the trooper that they were on their way to the Sturgis Rally to have a good time. When asked about illegal drugs and or narcotics, the passenger advised that he did have a small amount of marijuana. A search revealed; a glass pipe with white crystal residue, 1g meth, along with 0.1 ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia items. The driver was released and the passenger, Robert Gotchie was placed under arrest and charged accordingly.
