School & Public Lands Commissioner Johnson To Resign In August

PIERRE, S.D. – Jarrod Johnson, the South Dakota Commissioner of School and Public Lands, has announced his resignation.

In a letter to Gov. Dennis Daugaard, Johnson indicated that his resignation from office, which is effective Aug. 15, is for family reasons.

“It has been my pleasure to serve the people of South Dakota as Commissioner of School and Public Lands,” Johnson wrote.  “I have enjoyed my time in office managing those resources held in trust on behalf of students and endowed institutions.”

Johnson, a Republican from Corson, was elected Commissioner of School and Public Lands in 2006 and re-elected in 2010.

“I thank Jarrod Johnson for his service to our state,” Gov. Daugaard said.  “Jarrod has been a conscientious steward of school and public lands.  I wish him the very best in the future.”

The remainder of Johnson’s term, which ends in January 2015, will be filled by a gubernatorial appointment. The Governor plans to name a successor prior to the Aug. 15 resignation date.

The Commissioner of School and Public Lands is a constitutionally-created office that administers state lands set aside to support schools and state institutions.
