Impending Weather Leads To Cancellation Of Mosquito Control Conference

PIERRE, S.D. – Due to the spring snowstorm in the forecast, the Mosquito Control and West Nile Virus Conference scheduled for April 9 in Ft. Pierre has been cancelled.

“It’s difficult to think about mosquito control when we’re still dealing with winter weather. In many South Dakota communities the people who run the snow plows also do the mosquito control. These are hardworking folks with many duties,” said Dr. Lon Kightlinger, State Epidemiologist for the Department of Health. “We will be looking for other educational opportunities for community mosquito control programs, perhaps a webinar.”

In 2012, South Dakota experienced its worst West Nile season since 2007 with WNV detections in 48 counties. There were 203 human cases reported, including three deaths. More information about WNV prevention and control can be found on the web at http://westnile.sd.gov.

Strengthening the state’s response to current and emerging public health threats is one goal of the department’s Health 2020 initiative.
