               Pennington County Fatal Crash


What: Two-vehicle fatal crash

Where: Interstate 90, sixth-tenths of a mile east of Exit 55, Rapid City SD

When:          Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 3:35 p.m.


Driver 1: Shawn Henry Speirs, 33, Hill City, SD, serious injuries

Passenger 1: Mark Cline, 46, Rapid City, SD, serious injuries

Passenger 2: Raphael Washington, 49, Rapid City, SD, serious injuries

Passenger 3: Samuel Lewis, 57, Rapid City, SD, serious injuries

Passenger 4: Burns Landrum, 46, Rapid City, SD, serious injuries

Passenger 5: Kristian Sateren, 46, Sturgis, SD, fatal

Vehicle 1: 2007 Ford Econoline


Driver 2: Gail Yvonne Rentz, 58, Spearfish, SD, minor injuries

Vehicle 2: 2008 Buick CX


RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Sturgis, S.D., man died in a two vehicle crash on Interstate 90 near Exit 55 in Rapid City on Tuesday, May 7.


Kristian Sateren, 46, was a passenger in a 2007 Ford Econoline van traveling east in the passing lane on I-90. The driver of the van, Shawn Henry Speirs, 33, of Hill City, S.D., began to change lanes and collided with a 2008 Buick, also traveling east in the driving lane. The Ford went into the median and rolled. The Buick went off the south side of the roadway and down an embankment and then rolled.


Sateren was thrown from the Ford and received fatal injuries. Speirs received serious injuries, as did four other passengers in the Ford. All were taken to a Rapid City hospital.


Gail Yvonne Rentz, 58, of Spearfish, S.D., was driving the Buick. She received minor injuries and was taken to a Rapid City hospital.


Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Some of the passengers in the Ford may not have been wearing seatbelts.


No further information is immediately available.


The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Summerset Police Department, Blackhawk Fire Department and Rapid City Fire Department assisted.
