What: Two-vehicle fatal crash

Where: SD Highway 46 and SD Highway 19A, three miles south of Centerville, SD

When: Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, 2 p.m.


Driver 1: Gene Allan Stinton, 63, Le Mars, IA, fatal

Vehicle 1: 2002 International truck


Driver 2: Tom Franklin Laidlaw, 53, Stilt, CO, minor injuries

Vehicle 2: 2000 Peterbilt truck


CENTERVILLE, S.D. – An Iowa man died in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of S.D. Highway 46 and S.D. Highway 19A about three miles south of Centerville on Thursday, Sept. 12.


Gene Allan Stinton, 63, of Le Mars, Iowa, was driving eastbound on Highway 46 driving a 2002 International truck. Tom Franklin Laidlaw, 53, of Stilt, Colo., was southbound on Highway 19A driving a 2000 Peterbilt truck. Laidlaw stopped at the stop sign and then drove into the intersection to continue south. His vehicle was struck by Stinton’s truck, which had the right-of-way and no stop sign.


Stinton received fatal injuries in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt. Laidlaw, who was not wearing a seatbelt, received minor injuries.


No further information is immediately available.


The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Centerville Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Centerville Fire and Rescue, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and South Dakota Department of Transportation assisted.
