Get Moving! Join The 125 Miles For Health Challenge

PIERRE, S.D. – In honor of South Dakota’s 125th anniversary of statehood, the Department of Health is encouraging South Dakotans to get active by participating in the 125 Miles for Health Challenge. The challenge runs through November of 2014.

“When you decide to be more physically active you lower your risk of premature death, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, certain cancers, depression, diabetes and falls,” said Linda Ahrendt, chronic disease and health promotion administrator for the department. “Being active can start with something as simple as taking a walk during your lunch break.”

Ahrendt said the intent is to encourage community groups and others to organize walking challenges on the local level. The department’s www.HealthySD.gov website offers ideas and information about how schools, childcare centers, workplaces, communities, faith-based and healthcare organizations can participate in the challenge. Organizations that complete the challenge can register at the site and receive a certificate recognizing their participation.

Challenge participants are also encouraged to visit the department’s Get Your Tail on the Trail Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HealthySDTrails to learn more about the wealth of walking and hiking trails available in South Dakota.
