Indian Education Summit to feature school board panel, student-led discussions and national speakers

PIERRE – The 2014 Indian Education Summit will be held Sept. 28-30 at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel in Pierre.

The theme of the 11th annual event is From Every Beginning, a Bright Future. Keynote speakers include Brian Frejo and John Gritts. Frejo is a motivational speaker and founder of Created 4 Greatness, an organization in Oklahoma City. He encourages Native youth to achieve educational success, stay drug and alcohol free and celebrate their Native identity.

Gritts works with federal student aid programs within the U.S. Department of Education. He will share his experiences helping Native students navigate the financial aid process.

South Dakota artist Dick Termes will speak and lead breakout sessions. Termes creates spherical paintings known as Termespheres. He has taught at the elementary through postsecondary levels and explores concepts in the interaction between art and math.

The summit will also feature a school board panel, student-led discussions and a speaker from the Bureau of Indian Education. Gov. Dennis Daugaard will give the closing address Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The Indian Education Summit provides a forum for educators, board members, tribal leaders and parents to come together for a statewide conversation about the education of American Indian youth.
