Growing in Agriculture: Governor's Ag Ambassador Nominations

Growing In Agriculture

Governor’s Ag Ambassador Nominations

A column by Secretary of Agriculture Lucas Lentsch

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

For the last six years, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA) has hosted the Governor’s Agricultural Summit every summer at locations across South Dakota. This event brings together leaders in business, finance, education, government and production agriculture to discuss ways to harness the industry’s potential and learn more about the current challenges and opportunities happening for agriculture at local, regional and national levels.

It only seems fitting to also take time at the Summit to honor the Governor’s Ag Ambassador. At the event, the Governor celebrates an individual or organization for their contributions to South Dakota’s agricultural industry.

Last year, Governor Dennis Daugaard recognized Brad Greenway of Mitchell as the 2014 honoree. Brad has been a tremendous advocate for agriculture. He is a shareholder of Bluestem Family Farms, a 3,400 sow swine farrowing operation. He was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to the National Pork Board in 2009 and 2012, and continues to serve his second term as a member. Brad has participated in numerous international trips advocating for South Dakota and U.S. agriculture. Past recipients of this award also include Dr. Dan Gee of Brookings, Jim Woster of Sioux Falls, and Mike Held from Huron.

South Dakotans value servant leadership, hard work, honesty, humility and respect for others. The Governor’s Ag Ambassador Award recognizes South Dakotans who embody these ideals.

If you know an individual or organization that lives out these qualities, I strongly encourage you to nominate them for their exemplary behavior. The nomination form can be found at http://sdda.sd.gov/ under the “Happening Now” section and click on “Governor’s Ag Ambassador Nomination Form.”  Nominations are requested by Friday, April 17, 2015.

Governor Daugaard looks forward to celebrating one of our South Dakota agricultural leaders at the annual Governor’s Agricultural Summit. We have many committed and hardworking leaders to thank.
