State Fair Offers Special Days
HURON, S.D. –The South Dakota State Fair offers a variety of activities each day, thanks to several different day sponsors. Day sponsors include: Channel Seeds, Value Added Agriculture, Prostrollo Motors, South Dakota Farmers Union and the South Dakota State Fair Foundation.
Wednesday, Sept. 2, is Channel Seeds Preview Day. Preview Day at the State Fair offers a free gate admission to allow fair goers to get a sneak peak of what will be going on during the fair. The Goldstar Amusements carnival will open at 5 p.m. and all rides will be $1 each. The Red Wilk Construction CBR Bull Bash kicks off the grandstand entertainment.
Thursday, Sept. 3, is Value Added Ag Day. Value Added Ag Day has been with the State Fair for over 15 years. Specialty crop mini-seminars for local food production will take place throughout the day. As always, they will partner with the South Dakota Dairy Producers to hold an Ice Cream Social at 3 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 4, is Prostrollo Motors Day. Make sure to stop by Prostrollo Motors on Highway 14 prior to the fair to pick up the Prostrollos Rockin’ Rollback coupon for $1 off gate admission at the State Fair. The other half of this coupon can be entered at the Prostrollo Building for a chance to win meet and greet passes to the grandstand. See what’s coming in the year ahead and get a chance to win some great Chevy door prizes.
SD Farmers Union Day is Saturday, Sept. 5. The day begins with an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m. to honor young people receiving college scholarships. Immediately following, SDFU will announce the recipients of the 2015 Rural Dakota Pride Award. The Farmer’s Share Luncheon will be served from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for a suggested donation of $1 per person. Celebrate SD Farmers Union 100th Birthday with free cake in the Day Sponsor Tent at 3:30 p.m.
Constructing a Legacy Day is Sunday, Sept. 6. Visit the Constructing a Legacy Tent along Flag Avenue to reunite with longtime fairgoers and 4-H alumni and enjoy children’s activities and learn about the State Fair Foundation’s Nordby Exhibit Hall Capital Campaign. Free coffee and muffins will be available at 10 a.m. with free freeze pops at 1 p.m. The Foundation will be accepting donations toward their capital campaign, and donors of more that $1,000 will have the opportunity to have their name etched into one of the bricks on the new exhibit hall.
Monday, Sept. 7, is Poultry Party Day. Due to the Avian Influenza outbreak earlier this year, all live bird exhibitions have been suspended, but that’s no reason not to celebrate and have some fun! Shake your tail feathers at the State’s Largest Chicken Dance, test your skills at the “Something to Crow About” Bird Calling contest, and all redheads won’t want to miss out on the Call All Redheads Contest. If you dress up as Colonel Sanders on Monday, you receive free gate admission. Dakota Provisions will also be providing a Turkey Sandwich Feed at 12:30 p.m.
The 2015 South Dakota State Fair will run from Thursday, Sept. 3, through Monday, Sept. 7. Channel Seeds preview night will be Wednesday, Sept. 2. This year’s theme is “Sew it. Grow it. Show it.” For more information on State Fair events, contact the Fair office at 800-529-0900, visit www.sdstatefair.com or find them on Facebook or Twitter.
