South Dakota Developmental Center Under New Leadership


PIERRE, S.D. – The Department of Human Services has named Barb Abeln as the interim director of the South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC) in Redfield. 


“I am pleased to have a very capable and dedicated leader in the role of interim director,” Gloria Pearson, Secretary of Human Services said. “Barb’s knowledge and expertise are invaluable, and her leadership will help shape the future of SDDC.”


“I am very excited to be the interim director. My goal is to make SDDC the best place for employees and residents,” Abeln said. “I am committed to ensuring we provide the highest quality of care to the people we serve in the safest environment possible. The safety of employees and residents continues to be a top priority.”


Abeln has begun her tenure by hosting all staff meetings with presentations from Secretary Pearson. The meetings have focused on keeping employees informed about what is happening at SDDC, communicating future initiatives, sharing the positive happenings at the developmental center and seeking input from staff.
