Gov. Daugaard signs House Bill 1208

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed House Bill 1208 which will reduce the footprint of the South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC) in Redfield, S.D.

Department of Human Services Secretary Gloria Pearson said, “The bill will align the campus resources along with reinvesting in the current programs and properties that are desired for the center’s long term future.” Pearson added, “Maintaining buildings and land that are not needed by the Developmental Center programs creates unnecessary expenses.”

Gov. Daugaard and the Cabinet toured SDDC in May of 2015.  The programs and property were reviewed and feedback received which resulted in a committee to make recommendations for reducing the footprint.

The mission of the SDDC is to provide comprehensive specialized services designed to enhance quality of life and community inclusion for people with Intellectual Disabilities and/or Developmental Disabilities.
