2016 Arbor Day Essay Contest Winners Selected

PIERRE, S.D. – Tyrel Mansfield of Kadoka, Seth Schoon of White River and Jensine Matson of Ramona are the winners of the 2016 Arbor Day essay contest.

Sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Resource Conservation and Forestry Division (SDDA RCF), South Dakota’s conservation districts and McDonald’s Restaurants of South Dakota, the contest provides fifth and six grade students the opportunity to write about the importance of Arbor Day and tree planting in the state. This year there were 1,228 entries.

For their efforts, the students win awards and cash prizes in addition to learning more about trees. As first place winner, Mansfield receives a plaque, $100 in cash and a McDonald’s lined jacket. Her school, Kadoka Elementary, will receive $150 for the purchase of supplies or equipment. Schoon, the second place winner, receives a plaque and $75 cash while Matson receives a plaque and $50 for her third place essay. Mansfield, Schoon and Matson will read their essays and receive their prizes during Arbor Day celebrations in their hometown areas. All students who entered the contest will receive a McDonald’s dessert certificate and a packet of tree seeds, courtesy of Keep South Dakota Green Association and SDDA RCF.

South Dakota celebrates Arbor Day on the last Friday in April each year making it fall on April 29, 2016.

The essay contest has been held in South Dakota for 39 years. Winning essays can be found on the SD Conservation Districts website.
