Wildfire Awareness Month Coloring Contest Winners Announced

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Two youth from Rapid City are the winners of this year’s South Dakota Wildfire Awareness Month coloring contest.

Six-year-old Taylor Harrelson submitted the winning in the 3 to 7 year old age group and 9-year-old Julia Bradley sent in the winning entry in the 8 to 12 year old age group. They each will be awarded a plush Smokey Bear toy.

There were 354 entries in the 3 to 7 age group and 277 entries in the 8 to 12 age group.  This year’s theme was “One Less Spark, One Less Wildfire.”

South Dakota Wildfire Awareness Month was created to promote wildfire awareness, safety and prevention through public events held to remind citizens of the dangers of wildland fire. Through interagency cooperation, activities are planned to remind people of the simple steps that should be followed to prepare for and prevent them. This year South Dakota has also joined a multi-state proclamation with eight other states in promoting Wildfire Awareness during the month of May 2016.
