Abeln Named New South Dakota Developmental Center Director

REDFIELD, S.D. – The Department of Human Services (DHS) has hired Barb Abeln as the new director of the South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC) in Redfield, S.D.

“I am excited to serve as the SDDC director and have the opportunity to continue to work with a team that is dedicated to meeting the mission of our agency. As an agency we will further build connections with the community and serve as a state resource in the continuum of supports which are provided to people with intellectual disabilities,” said Abeln.

Abeln enters the position with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in psychology and sociology from Northern State University. Abeln has been in a supervisory or leadership role at SDDC since 1991 and has served as the interim director at SDDC for the past four months.

DHS Cabinet Secretary Gloria Pearson said, “We are truly fortunate to have such a qualified person in place to fill this role.  Barb’s experience in a variety of positions at SDDC has made her uniquely qualified.”

The mission of the SDDC is to provide comprehensive specialized services designed to enhance quality of life and community inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities and/or developmental disabilities.
