Charles Mix County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-vehicle crash

Where:  South Dakota Highway 44, mile marker 308

              Two miles east of Platte, S.D.

When:   11:11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 23, 2017


Driver No. 1: Female, 87, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2007 Chevrolet Impala


Driver No. 2: Male, 70, Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Vehicle: 2008 Saturn Aura XR


PLATTE, S.D. – One person died in a two-vehicle crash that happened Monday morning east of Platte.


The name of the deceased, along with name of the other driver, are not being released pending notification of family members. They were the only people involved in the crash.


A 2007 Chevrolet Impala was eastbound on South Dakota Highway 44 when the driver lost control. The vehicle eventually went across the center line and into the path of a westbound 2008 Saturn Aura XR.


The female driver of the Impala, 87, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 70-year-old male driver of the second vehicle sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported first to Platte and then to a Mitchell hospital.


Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office, Platte Police Department, Platte Fire Department and Platte Ambulance.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
