Names Released in Charles Mix County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-vehicle crash

Where:  South Dakota Highway 44, mile marker 308

              Two miles east of Platte, S.D.

When:   11:11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 23, 2017


Driver No. 1: Margaret Haines, 87, Platte, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2007 Chevrolet Impala


Driver No. 2: Lloyd Kirk, 70, Palisade, NE, Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Vehicle: 2008 Saturn Aura XR


PLATTE, S.D. – An 87-year-old Platte woman has been identified as the person who died in a two-vehicle crash that happened Monday morning east of Platte.


A 2007 Chevrolet Impala was traveling eastbound on South Dakota Highway 44 when the driver lost control. The vehicle eventually went across the center line and into the path of a westbound 2008 Saturn Aura XR.


Margaret Haines, who was driving the Impala, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, Lloyd Kirk, 70, Palisade, NE, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported first to Platte and then to a Mitchell hospital.


Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. They were the only occupants involved in the crash.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office, Platte Police Department, Platte Fire Department and Platte Ambulance.



The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
