State Prison Inmate Placed On Escape Status

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- A state prison inmate has been placed on escape status after failing to return to prison from a job furlough.

Inmate Salathiel Pointer was supposed to return to the Sioux Falls Community Work Center on the grounds of the South Dakota State Penitentiary late this afternoon following the job furlough. Escape procedures were enacted once Pointer failed to return at the designated time.

Pointer, age 47, is a black male with black hair and brown eyes. He is 6-feet-1 inches tall and weighs approximately 210 pounds.

Pointer is currently serving a 10-year sentence for grand theft out of Minnehaha County.

Anyone who sees Pointer or knows of his whereabouts should contact law enforcement immediately.

Failure to return following an assignment constitutes second-degree escape, a class 5 felony, and is punishable by a maximum of 5 years in prison. South Dakota Codified Law 22-11A-5 states that any person who conceals any prisoner knowing that the prisoner has escaped is guilty of a Class 5 felony.
