BROOKINGS, S.D. – The 6th Street construction project from 20th Avenue to east of 34th Avenue is scheduled to begin Phase 1 (westbound lanes) on Monday, April 3, weather dependent. Phase 0 began on March 20.
Two-way traffic will be maintained in the eastbound lanes of 6th Street while the westbound lanes are reconstructed. Through traffic and over-width traffic will be detoured to Interstate 29 and the Highway 14 bypass.
In addition, I-29 traffic from just south of Exit 132 to just north of Exit 133 will be two-way in the northbound lanes while the west half of the westbound structure is removed and then switched to two-way traffic in the southbound lanes while the east half of the westbound structure is removed. The same traffic configuration will happen when the new structure is being built.
There will be a number of speed reductions including:
- 45 mph on the Highway 14 bypass along the detour route
- 30 mph speed reduction for 6th Street through the project limits
- I-29 traffic speed will be reduced to 65 mph through the bridge construction limits just north and south of Exit 132.
An 11-foot width restriction will be in-place throughout the construction zones.
Traffic needing to access the industrial park area is encouraged to use the Highway 14 bypass, 32nd Avenue and 34th Avenue. Please allow extra time for travel and watch for detour signs and increased traffic on these roadways.
The public is also advised the noise from machines breaking up the concrete and from the following pile driving portion of the structure work will be loud at times.
The public is invited to attend the weekly meetings to discuss progress and sequencing being held every Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Department of Transportation in Brookings located at 2131 34th Avenue. A web page with current information about the project is located at: http://www.sddot.com/travelers/projects/6thStBrkgs/default.aspx.
