State Officials meet with Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Leadership

Pierre, South Dakota – State officials met Thursday with the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate leadership to discuss a variety of issues.

Secretary of Tribal Relations Steve Emery and staff, along with Secretary of Revenue Andy Gerlach, Secretary of Public Safety Trevor Jones with South Dakota Highway Patrol Colonel Craig Price, and Secretary of Corrections Denny Kaemingk met with Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Chairman Dave Flute and the tribal council.

Included in the discussion were public safety, tax collection agreements and efforts to work in finding other areas in which the state and tribe can collaborate to the benefit of all.

“We always appreciate the chance to discuss public safety issues with the tribes,” said Public Safety Department Secretary Trevor Jones. “Not only do we discover that we are making progress cooperatively in some areas; we also find other issues to work on together as well.”

Officials also discussed the tribal parole program that the tribe has been operating since November of 2013.

“It is important for the state to go out and meet with tribal leadership, to discuss issues and concerns and look for ways in which we can work together,” said Secretary Emery, “I look forward to meeting with our other tribal nations throughout the summer and beyond.”

State officials were honored that the tribe graciously provided a meal of buffalo.
