PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin a resurfacing project on Highway 83 from the south end of the Bad River Bridge in Fort Pierre for about 22 miles south.

Minor erosion control and drainage pipe repair work has already begun. The milling and paving operations are expected to occur from mid-April to through mid-July.

Work on the project will include micro-milling asphalt concrete, asphalt concrete resurfacing, pipe and erosion repair, rumble strips, pavement markings and centerline rumble stripes.

During the micro-milling and asphalt paving operations, traffic will be directed through the work zone with the use of flaggers and pilot car. Motorists can expect some delays on Highway 83, both north and southbound, with lane closures being used while these operations proceed.

Other projects that are part of the same contract include placing an asphalt wearing course on Highway 14B (Garfield Avenue) from 4th Street in Pierre to the intersection of Highway 14B/14. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and a pilot car and drivers can expect delays in this location and may want to consider an alternate route. This work is expected to take place from mid-June through mid-July.

The contractor will also be working on Highway 14 from the end of the divided highway to approximately six miles east of Pierre placing centerline rumble strips. Work is expected to begin on June 26. Flaggers and/or a pilot car may be needed during this work and motorists can expect delays during this operation.

Motorists are asked to slow down in work zones and be prepared for suddenly slowing, merging and stopped traffic as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the roadway.

The prime contractor on the $12 million project is Duininck, Inc. of Prinsburg, Minnesota. The completion date for the project is Sept. 27.
