Grant County Fatal Crash


What:   One-vehicle crash
Where: South Dakota Highway 123, mile marker 176

              Six miles south of Wilmot

When:  4:45 p.m., Monday, June 19, 2017


Driver:  Roland Karels, 77, Big Stone City, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 1999 Ford Sterling



WILMOT, S.D. – A Big Stone City, S.D. man has died as a result of injuries suffered in a one-vehicle crash that happened Monday, June 19, south of Wilmot.


Roland Karels, 77, was driving a 1999 Ford Sterling northbound on South Dakota Highway 123 when he lost control. The vehicle overturned and left the roadway.


Karels, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was first taken by ambulance to a Milbank hospital and later flown that night to a Sioux Falls hospital. He died on Wednesday, June 21.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Also on scene were the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Roberts County Sheriff’s Office, Grants-Roberts Ambulance, Wimot First Responders and Grant County Rescue.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
