Name Released in Hughes County Fatal Crash


What:  Two-vehicle crash

Where:  U.S. Highway 14, Mile Marker 254

               Four miles east of Blunt

When:   9:23 a.m., July 7, 2017


Driver No. 1: Francis Crain, 74, Harrold, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2010 Lincoln MKX


Driver No. 2: Female, 65, Rapid City, S.D., Minor Injuries

Vehicle: 2012 Chevrolet Malibu


BLUNT, S.D. – A Harrold, S.D. man has been identified as the person who died in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning east of Blunt.


Francis Crain, 74, was driving a 2010 Lincoln MKX westbound on U.S. Highway 14 near mile marker 254. A 2012 Chevrolet Malibu was driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 14 at the same location. The Lincoln drifted across the center line, collided head-on with the Malibu, and rolled.


Crain, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.


The 65-year-old female driver of the Chevrolet Malibu sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported to a Pierre hospital. She was wearing a seat belt. As the victim in this case, the Rapid City woman has invoked her Marsy’s Law rights which prohibits her name from being released to the public.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were the state Department of Game, Fish & Parks, Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, American Medical Response/Pierre, Blunt Fire Department and Harrold Rural Fire Department.



The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
