Nature, Sand Candles and Halloween in July this Weekend

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota state parks offer unique ways for visitors to learn more about nature and enjoy the outdoors. From building wax creations to trick-or-treating, there is an activity for everyone.

Saturday, July 15

  • Little Wings on the Prairie, Oahe Downstream Recreation Area, Fort Pierre. Discover the importance of pollinators by stopping at educational stations near the Prairie Butterfly Garden. 9 a.m. – 12 noon CDT. Info: 605.223.7722
  • Spectacular Sand Candles, Oakwood Lakes State Park, Bruce. Create a sand and wax souvenir candle to take home. 10 a.m. CDT. Info: 605.627.5441
  • Tree Ring Circus, Good Earth State Park at Blood Run, Sioux Falls. Learn about the life of Good Earth’s trees and how to identify them. 2 p.m. CDT. Info: 605.213.1036
  • Halloween in July, Lake Poinsett Recreation Area, Arlington. Decorate your campsite for Halloween while the kids decorate masks. Trick-or-treating will follow the mask fashion show. 7–9 p.m. CT. Info: 605.983.5085

All events are free, but a park entrance license is required.
