Airbnb reaches tax agreement with South Dakota, will begin collecting taxes Sept. 1

PIERRE, S.D., -- Beginning Sept. 1, Airbnb will begin collecting and remitting state and municipal taxes on all eligible bookings in South Dakota.

The appropriate sales and tourism taxes will be charged when booking through Airbnb. Airbnb will then remit the taxes collected to the State of South Dakota. By collecting and remitting the taxes, Airbnb ensures a streamlined process for its host community.

“Agreements like this allow communities to benefit from the economic impact of home sharing while also making it easier for Airbnb hosts, the vast majority of whom are middle class people sharing their own home, to comply with state tax laws,” said Marisa Moret, Airbnb public policy manager for South Dakota. “Our community of hosts wants to pay their fair share of taxes and we want to help. We are excited to reach this agreement with the State of South Dakota to be able to collect and remit taxes on behalf of our hosts.”

“We applaud Airbnb in coming to an agreement with us, and this is another example of the company’s leadership and innovation,” said South Dakota Department of Revenue Secretary Andy Gerlach. “This agreement is another step in the right direction in maintaining tax fairness as our economy continues to evolve.”

South Dakota has more than 600 Airbnb hosts, whose typical annual host income is $4,400. To date, there have been more than 160 million guest arrivals at Airbnb listings around the globe, including 26,000 in South Dakota in the last year.

With this new agreement, South Dakota joins a list of more than 310 jurisdictions globally where Airbnb has collected and remitted more than $300 million in hotel and tourist taxes.
