WALL, S.D. – One person was killed early Monday morning east of Wall in a crash involving two semi-trucks and trailers.

Names of the deceased and two other men who were injured are not being released pending notification of family members. They were the only people involved.

A 2014 Volvo VNL semi-truck and trailer was eastbound on Interstate 90 when the driver lost control. The driver overcorrected and the tractors and trailer tipped over and blocked both eastbound lanes of I-90.

Both the driver, 29, and the passenger, 27, were able to safely get out of the truck before an eastbound 2010 D120 freightliner, pulling double trailers, collided with the first semi-truck and trailer. The second driver, a 65-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the first vehicle were taken by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital where they were treated and released. Charges are pending against the driver.

Seatbelt use by the three men is under investigation.

Due to a large debris area, the two eastbound lanes were closed to traffic for several hours.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and Wall Ambulance.

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
