Public Comment Sought on School for the Deaf Report

MADISON, S.D. – The South Dakota Board of Regents seeks public comment on a report that recommends selling undeveloped property at the South Dakota School for the Deaf in Sioux Falls, while maintaining the school’s core operations and services at that site.

Public comments on the plan are sought by Nov. 16, in advance of a December 5-7 meeting of the Board of Regents when further action is expected.

After the South Dakota Legislature authorized a possible sale of School for the Deaf property in Sioux Falls, a regents’ task force spent several months taking a closer look at the property and its utilization. A task force report, with recommendations, was presented to the full Board of Regents meeting this week in Madison. The report and recommendations can be found at this web link: https://www.sdbor.edu/Documents/SDSD_Report.pdf.

Recommendations call for core School for the Deaf operations to continue at the Sioux Falls site, while proceeding to sell about two-fifths of the property that is undeveloped except for a running track and green space seldom used. The report also recommends more aggressive efforts to consolidate School for the Deaf operations at its current site, so that more of the property could be leased out or sold to other parties.

A commercial real estate professional firm in Sioux Falls, Bender Commercial Real Estate Services, has been selected to assist the Board of Regents with its planning and next steps.
