Gov. Daugaard Selected To Serve On President’s Apprenticeship Task Force

PIERRE, S.D. – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced Gov. Dennis Daugaard is among the 20 individuals who have been selected to serve on President Donald J. Trump’s Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion.

“In South Dakota, the number of people looking for employment is roughly equal to the number of job openings in our state. The problem is that many of the people who want to work don’t have the skills needed for the available jobs,” Gov. Daugaard said. “Apprenticeships can help rectify the skills gap that exists here and throughout the nation. I thank the Trump Administration for appointing me to this task force which will promote these kinds of opportunities.”

The task force was created under President Trump’s June executive order to identify strategies to expand apprenticeships. The group will be chaired by U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta and is responsible for issuing a report to the President with recommendations on national initiatives, administrative and legislative reforms, and private-sector participation.

Gov. Daugaard’s service on the task force coincides with his year-long workforce initiative as chair of the Western Governors’ Association. As a part of that initiative, Daugaard has attended workshops on workforce in Sioux Falls and Denver, and is in Oklahoma City this week for the third workshop.
