Names Released in Beadle County Fatal Crash


What:      Two-Vehicle Crash

Where:    U.S. Highway 14, mile marker 323

                Eight miles east of Wessington, S.D.

When:     2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017


Driver No. 1:  Jeffrey Airheart, 25, Virgil, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 1992 Chevrolet C1500 Pickup


Driver No. 2: Karsten Houdek, 28, Dell Rapid, S.D., Minor Injuries

Vehicle: 2009 Ford F-150 Pickup


WESSINGTON, S.D. – A 25-year-old Virgil, S.D., man has been identified as the person who died Sunday in a two-vehicle crash east of Wessington.


A 1992 Chevrolet C1500 pickup was westbound on U.S. Highway 14 when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup.


Jeffrey Airheart, who was driving the Chevrolet pickup,  was transported by ambulance to the Huron hospital and then airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where he later died of his injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The other driver, 28-year-old Karsten Houdek of Dell Rapids, S.D., received minor injuries and was not transported to a hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were the Beadle County Sheriff’s Office, Wolsey Fire and Ambulance and Wessington Fire and Ambulance.  


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
