Dewey County Fatal Crash


What:      One-Vehicle Crash

Where:    U.S. Highway 212, mile marker 183

                3 ½ miles west of La Plant, S.D. 

When:     7:18 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2017


Driver:  Christopher Churchill, 34, Maple Lake, MN, Fatal Injuries

Passenger: Nicholas Sjolin, 33, Buffalo, MN, Minor Injuries

Vehicle: 2005 Chevy Silverado


La PLANT, S.D. – A 34-year-old Maple Lake, MN man died Monday night in a one-vehicle cash west of La Plant.


A 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was eastbound on U.S. Highway 212 when the driver lost control on the icy road. The vehicle entered the south ditch and rolled.


Christopher Churchill of Maple Lake, MN, was the driver. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.  He was taken to the Eagle Butte hospital where he later died.


Nicholas Sjolin, 33, of Buffalo, MN. was the lone passenger in the vehicle. He was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies involved were the Dewey County Sheriff’s Office and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Law Enforcement.
