Names Released in Pennington County Fatal Crash



What:      Two-Vehicle Crash

Where:    Sheridan Lake and Dunsmore Road

                In Rapid City City Limits

When:     8:23 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017


Driver No. 1:  Brent Thurness, 49, Rapid City, S.D., Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Vehicle: 2015 GMC Sierra


Driver No. 2: Frank Gott, 25,Box Elder, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 1999 Acura 3.2 TL


RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Box Elder, S.D., man has been identified as the person who died in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday night on Sheridan Lake Road in Rapid City.


A 1999 Acura 3.2 TL was eastbound on Sheridan Lake Road when the 25-year-old male driver lost control of the vehicle on the curve near Dunsmore Road. He overcorrected and went into the other lane, colliding with a westbound 2015 GMC Sierra.


Frank Gott, who was driving the Acura, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.


Brent Thurness, 49, of Rapid City  was driving the Sierra. He was wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital.


The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Fire and Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire Department and Pennington County Search and Rescue.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
