GFP Officials Remind Trail Users to Respect Groomed Trails

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) is reminding winter hikers to respect groomed cross country skiing trails.

“Groomed trails are for skiers,” explains Lynn Spomer, visitor services coordinator for South Dakota state parks. “Once the trails are groomed, we ask that walkers, snowshoers and dog walkers please stay to the side of the trail.”

Foot prints in the middle of a ski groove breaks the skiers’ momentum. Many trip and fall, damaging skis, equipment and sometimes hurting people, Spomer said.

Cross country ski trails are groomed at the Outdoor Campuses in Sioux Falls and Rapid City and twelve South Dakota state parks. For more information, visit gfp.sd.gov.
