Custer County Fatal Crash


What:      One-Vehicle Crash

Where:    South Dakota Highway 40, mile marker 52

                Four miles east of Hermosa, S.D.

When:     11:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018


Driver:  Male, 44, Life Threatening Injuries

Passenger No. 1: Male, 34,Life Threatening Injuries

Passenger No. 2: Female, 47, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2006 Chevrolet Uplander


HERMOSA, S.D. – One woman has died of injuries sustained in a one-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday morning east of Hermosa.


Two other occupants received life-threatening injuries. Names of the three people involved are not being released pending notification of families.


A 2006 Chevrolet Uplander was westbound on South Dakota Highway 40 when the vehicle drifted off the roadway and the driver lost control. The vehicle eventually went across both lanes of the roadway, into the south ditch and rolled.


Both passengers, a 34-year-old male and 47-year-old female, and a small puppy were ejected from the vehicle. The driver, a 44-year-old male, remained in the vehicle.


All three were taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital where the female passenger died Sunday morning. The puppy was taken to a Rapid City veterinarian.


Whether seatbelts were used is under investigation. Charges are pending against the driver.  


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies on scene were the Custer County Sheriff’s Office and Battle Creek Ambulance.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
