Gov. Daugaard Names David Knoff As First Circuit Judge

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today that he will appoint David Knoff of Yankton as a circuit judge in South Dakota’s First Judicial Circuit.

Knoff will fill the vacancy that was created late last year, when Circuit Judge Steven R. Jensen was appointed to the South Dakota Supreme Court.  The First Circuit includes Aurora, Bon Homme, Buffalo, Brule, Charles Mix, Clay, Davison, Douglas, Hanson, Hutchinson, McCook, Turner, Union and Yankton counties.

“David Knoff is a respected attorney and a leader in his community,” said Gov. Daugaard.  “He has a commitment to service and to the legal profession, and he will make an excellent judge.”

Knoff is a partner in Kennedy Pier Knoff Loftus, LLP of Yankton and has practiced with that firm since his graduation in 1997 from the University of South Dakota School of Law.  Knoff earned his bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University.

“I am grateful the Governor has appointed me to the First Circuit bench,” said Knoff. “To fill the void that Justice Jensen and our other retired judges have left behind will be a challenge.  I intend to do my best to serve the citizens of South Dakota.”

Knoff has been a member of the Yankton City Commission since 2007, and served as Mayor from 2010-12.  He is an alternate board chair for the Yankton County Board of Mental Illness, and is an adjunct professor at the USD Law School, teaching mediation.

Knoff and his wife, Jozette, have three children.

*Knoff is pronounced kuh-NOFF.
