Regents Recognize BHSU Student Organizations

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The South Dakota Board of Regents recognized student organizations from Black Hills State University for their outstanding academic, community, and organizational work.

BHSU student groups receiving awards were:

  • Award for Academic Excellence KBHU-TV gives students the opportunity to gain television broadcast experience while engaged in information and entertainment programming. In the past year, KBHU-TV implemented bi-weekly news segments covering campus and community events, plus produced commercials and advertising for clubs and organizations. Content is aired on both the campus TV station and YouTube. The station has also sponsored student government leadership debates and town hall segments.

  • Community Service Award University Honors Club represents the university and its honors program to prospective students, their families, and the public. With a goal of getting BHSU honors students more involved in the campus and community, the club sponsored a welcome social, Swarm Days float, blood drive, food pantry drives, and volunteered for groups such as the Humane Society and the West River Spay Neuter Coalition.

  • Award for Organizational Leadership – The goal of the Environmental Sustainability Student Organization (ESSO) is to protect and conserve the environment, while creating more awareness of environmental topics on campus and within the community. Members volunteered to conduct residence hall waste audits and gardening workshops for students; they also learned to produce biodiesel using vegetable oil left over from the campus food service. They conducted hikes to Lookout Mountain and participated in sustainability conferences focused on higher education.
