Bennett County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-vehicle crash

Where:  South Dakota Highway 73, mile marker 26

               15 miles south of Long Valley, S.D.

When:    8:55 a.m., March 30, 2018


Driver No. 1: Male, 21, No Injuries

Vehicle: 1996 Kenworth T600 semi truck and trailer


Driver No. 2: Male, 27, Fatal Injuries

Passenger: Male, 9, Minor Injuries

Vehicle: 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Pickup


LONG VALLEY, S.D. – One person died in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Friday morning south of Long Valley.


Names of the deceased and the other two people involved are not being released by state officials pending notification of family members.


A 1996 Kenworth T600 semi-truck and trailer was southbound on South Dakota Highway 73 and was preparing to make a right-hand turn into a field. A 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pickup, which also was southbound, struck the rear of the trailer.


The pickup’s male driver, 27, had to be extricated and was taken to the Bennett County hospital where he later was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a seatbelt.


A 9-year-old male, who was a passenger in the pickup, suffered minor injuries. The 21-year-old male driver of the semi truck was not injured. Both were wearing seatbelts.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
