Names Released in Hand County Fatal Crash


What:    Vehicle-Pedestrian Collision

Where:  U.S. Highway 14 and South Dakota 45 South Junction

               Within Miller, S.D. city limits

When:   1:09 p.m., Thursday, April 5, 2018


Driver:  Jon Rowe, 55, Wolsey, S.D., No Injuries

Vehicle: 2007 Peterbilt Semi tractor-trailer


Pedestrian: Donald Simpson, 80, Miller, S.D., Fatal Injuries


MILLER, S.D. – An 80-year-old Miller man has been identified as the person who died in a vehicle-pedestrian collision Thursday afternoon in Miller.


A 2007 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer was stopped at the south junction of South Dakota Highway 45 and U.S. Highway 14 in Miller. It is a four-way stop. The semi had stopped and was preparing to turn left onto U.S. Highway 14.


Donald Simpson, who was in a motorized wheelchair, entered the intersection crosswalk from the west. When the semi-truck driver began his left-hand turn, he struck the pedestrian, who later died of his injuries at the Miller hospital.


Charges are pending against Jon Rowe, 55, Wolsey, S.D., who was driving the semi. He was not injured.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
