The Department of Social Services Hires Human Services Center Administrator

PIERRE, S.D. – The Department of Social Services (DSS) has named Ken Cole as the Human Services Center (HSC) hospital administrator.

Cole has extensive experience in behavioral health leadership and state psychiatric hospital administration, and is passionate about serving individuals with behavioral health needs. Cole is slated to start his position on Tuesday, May 29, 2018.

“We are excited to have Ken join our team, and I am confident he has the skills and qualifications necessary to lead the hospital,” said state Department of Social Services Secretary Lynne Valenti. “His knowledge and background working with state psychiatric hospitals will be an asset to HSC.

Cole has a Masters of Public Administration degree and is currently the director of operations for the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE)-Mental Health Program in Colorado. In this position, he has led technical assistance and program evaluation projects for various state psychiatric hospitals and state mental health agencies. Prior to his role at WICHE, Cole worked for the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health and was responsible for the management of Colorado’s two state psychiatric hospitals.

HSC is a licensed in-patient state psychiatric hospital and chemical dependency treatment facility which provides services for acute, psychiatric rehabilitation, geriatric and adolescent patients. The hospital is located in Yankton, S.D., and has been providing care to the people of South Dakota since 1879.

Since January 2018, Steve Lindquist has been serving as the interim administrator at HSC. Lindquist previously served as the HSC hospital administrator from 1989 to 1997, and most recently was the assistant vice president for Behavioral Health at Avera McKennan Behavioral Health in Sioux Falls.
