Yankton County Fatal Crash


What:    One-vehicle crash

Where:  U.S. Highway 81, mile marker 10

               Six miles north of Yankton, S.D.

When:   7:05 p.m., Sunday, May 13, 2018


Driver: Male, 23, Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Passenger: Female, 21, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 1998 Ford Explorer


YANKTON, S.D. – One person died and another was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday night north of Yankton.


The names of the two people involved are not being released pending notification of families.


A 1998 Ford Explorer was northbound on U.S. Highway 81 when the driver failed to stay in the lane and crossed over the centerline into the southbound lane. The driver of the Ford Explorer lost control when he swerved after he came into contact with a southbound vehicle. The Explorer went across the southbound lane and into the west ditch where it rolled.


Both occupants were not wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicle. The 21-year-old female passenger was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where she was pronounced dead.


The 23-year-old male driver suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a Yankton hospital. Charges are pending against the driver.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
