Names Released In Yankton County Fatal Crash

 

What:    One-vehicle crash

Where:  U.S. Highway 81, mile marker 10

               Six miles north of Yankton, S.D.

When:   7:05 p.m., Sunday, May 13, 2018

 

Driver: Stephen Lufkins, 23, Sisseton, S.D., Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Passenger: Lucille Casiano, 21, Sisseton, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 1998 Ford Explorer

  

YANKTON, S.D. – A Sisseton, S.D., woman has been identified as the person who died Sunday night in a one-vehicle crash north of Yankton.

 

A 1998 Ford Explorer was northbound on U.S. Highway 81 when the driver, Stephen Lufkins, 23, of Sisseton, S.D., failed to stay in his lane and crossed over the centerline into the southbound lane. The driver of the Ford Explorer lost control when he swerved after coming into contact with a southbound vehicle. The Explorer went across the southbound lane and into the west ditch where it rolled.

 

Both occupants in the Ford Explorer were not wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicle. The 21-year-old female passenger, Lucille Casiano, was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where she was pronounced dead.

 

Lufkins suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a Yankton hospital. Charges are pending against him.

 

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

 

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
