Names Released In Codington County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-vehicle crash

Where:  U.S. Highway 212, mile marker 367

               Eight miles west of Watertown, S.D.

When:   12:37 p.m., Friday, May 18, 2018


Driver No 1: Jimmy Westrud, 67, Brooten, MN, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2009 Harley Davidson RS 2009


Driver No. 2: Roy French, 51, Watertown, S.D., No Injuries

Vehicle: 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500K Pickup


WATERTOWN, S.D. – A Brooten, MN man has been identified as the person who died Friday in a motorcycle and pickup/trailer crash west of Watertown. .


Jimmy Westrud, 67, was driving a 2009 Harley Davidson RS 2009 westbound on U.S. Highway 212 when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The motorcycle crossed the centerline and into the path of an eastbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500K pickup pulling a trailer.


The motorcycle driver, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle. He later died as a result of his injuries.


Roy French, 51, of Watertown was driving the pickup. He was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.



The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
