Chip Seal and Fog Seal Projects in the Mitchell Area

MITCHELL, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) says chip seal and fog seal applications will be applied to several highways in the Mitchell Area of the state. The contractor started on Tuesday, June 12, and will move from one project to the next in the following order:

 

  1. U.S. Highway 18 – Nine miles, from just east of Jct. S.D. Highway 43 east to just east of the Jct. of U.S. Highway 281. The chip seal will begin on Tuesday, June 12 and will take approximately two days to complete. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  2. S.D. Highway 1806 – 10 miles, from Highway 18 junction north to where the pavement ends. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days. The fog seal will take another two days to complete.
  3. S.D. Highway 44 – 15 miles, from the Missouri River Bridge to just east of Platte.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is four days. The fog seal will take another three days to complete.
  4. S.D. Highway 50 – Five miles, from Highway 44 junction north to two miles east of Academy. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days.  The fog seal will take another day to complete.
  5. U.S. Highway 281 – 12 miles, from just south of Highway 42 junction north to just north of Highway 258 junction. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  6. S.D. Highway 34 – Nine miles, from just west of Highway 50 junction east.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  7. S.D. Highway 34 – Eight miles, from just west of the west Highway 37 junction east to the east junction of Highway 37. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  8. S.D. Highway 37 – 12 miles, from just south of the Davison/Sanborn County Line north to the junction of Highway 34. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  9. U.S. Highway 81 – Eight miles, from Salem north to the McCook/Miner County Line. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section of highway is two days. The fog seal will take approximately two days to complete.
  10. Interstate 90 Shoulders – 17 miles, just east of Exit 344 east to the Salem Rest Area. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section of highway is five days. The fog seal will take approximately another three days to complete.
  11. S.D. Highway 38 – 20 miles, north of Alexandria east to just east of Spencer Quarry. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is four days.  The fog seal will take approximately another three days to complete.

 

On the two-lane routes receiving a chip seal and a fog seal, traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided through the project with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. A delay of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours.

 

On the Interstate routes, traffic will be reduced to one lane with lane closures.

 

Loose gravel will be present for a period of 36 to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application. Traffic should travel at 40 mph or the speed limit, whichever is less, during this time frame. The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip & fog seal projects.

 

The Road Guy Construction Company, Inc. from Yankton is the prime contractor on the $4.2 million contract.
