Custer County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-vehicle crash

Where:  U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 4

              23 miles west of Custer, S.D.

When:   8:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2018


Driver No. 1: Female, 73, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2018 Hyundai Elantra


Driver No. 2: Male, 66, Minor Injuries

Vehicle: 2000 Peterbilt Conventional 379


CUSTER, S.D. – A 73-year-old woman died Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash west of Custer.


The name of the deceased is not being released pending notification of family.


A 2018 Hyundai Elantra was eastbound on U.S. Highway 16 and traveling on the shoulder of the westbound side. A westbound 2000 Peterbilt Conventional 379 fuel truck attempted to avoid the car, but the two vehicles collided.


The driver of the car, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 66-year-old truck driver received minor injuries.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
