Stanley County Fatal Crash


What:    One-vehicle crash

Where:  Sansarc Road

               12 miles north of Hayes, S.D.

When:    7:39 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018


Driver: Female, 45, Minor Injuries

Passenger: Female, 20, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2002 Ford Expedition


HAYES, S.D. – One person died Tuesday night in a one-vehicle rollover north of Hayes.


Name of the deceased, along with that of another person injured, have not been released pending notification of family members. They were the only two people involved.


A 2002 Ford Expedition was westbound on Sansarc Road when the driver lost control trying to avoid a deer that had entered the roadway. The vehicle went into the ditch and rolled, coming to rest on its roof.


The 20-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 45-year-old female driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a Pierre hospital.


Both occupants were wearing seatbelts. No charges are pending against the driver.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
