Names Released In Grant County Fatal


What:     Vehicle-Passenger Crash

Where:   146th Street

                Five miles east and one-half mile south of Milbank, S.D.

When:    10:20 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018


Driver:  Nicholas Ruhr, 16, Big Stone City, S.D., No Injuries

Passenger: Tanner Schwagel, 16, Milbank, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2001 Dodge Intrepid


MILBANK, S.D.  – A 16-year-old male from Milbank has been identified as the person who died Sunday morning after falling off the hood of a moving vehicle near Milbank.


Tanner Schwagel was riding on the hood of a 2001 Dodge Intrepid which was going westbound on 146th Street. The rider’s foot got caught on the front bumper and he was dragged under the vehicle. After being taken first by ambulance to the Milbank hospital, he was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where he later died.


Nicholas Ruhr, 16, of Big Stone City, S.D., was the driver and was not injured. Charges are pending against him through the state’s attorney’s office.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
